Art in Interior Design

Interior design has the power to transform a room into living art through color, texture, patterns and the spatial organization of furniture. Traditional forms of fine art, like painting, photography and sculpture can also play an important role in the design of your space. In fact, art is a great way to make a room reflect your unique personality, because everyone has different taste in art. Below are four major categories of art to consider for your own space, along with a few inspirational examples.

Paintings and Prints

Paintings and their reprints are one of the most popular forms of art to have on display in the home. Big, bold paintings can set the tone for an entire room, while smaller pieces are great additions to sometimes overlooked spaces (I love to put small works of art in the powder room, for example).

Photography

Photography is a simple way to showcase the things you love like family, pets, travel, nature, sports, etc. Get prints of your own photography in sizes larger than the standard 4 x 6 snapshot to mount on the walls, or keep large wall-mounted photos to professional works and place your personal photos on bookshelves and mantles as accessory pieces. Old fashioned photo albums make great coffee table pieces that will be sure to spark some conversation when guests are over!

Sculpture

So you’re not rich enough to have Michelangelo’s David in your foyer? No worries—sculpture is an extremely diverse area of fine art that goes well beyond the stone works shown in movie mansions. Consider 3D pieces made of just about any material – stone, wood, metal, glass, ceramics, etc. Here’s a playful alternative to the David: Eero Aarnio’s Magis Puppy!

Graphics

A popular trend in residential design is the application of vinyl wall graphics, which can include patterns, shapes, text or images. This versatility makes wall graphics appropriate for any space, from a formal dining room with an ornamental black and white pattern to a child’s bedroom enlivened with whimsical cartoon characters. Vinyl graphics can be applied on painted walls, ceilings or glass and can be easily removed when desired.
