A Passion for Design

What started as a passion project, turned into much more for Lakshmi

Ever wonder who’s behind Roomations and how it came to be? Well, in a series of interviews, we’re talking to the three founders of Roomations to find out why they started Roomations and what inspires them to drive the company forward each day. This month we’re talking to Lakshmi Bhargave, the brains behind technology and online marketing at Roomations.

Q: Why did you start Roomations?

A: I have always had a passion and eye for interior design. I used to be a graphic designer several years ago and many friends and family would always ask my opinion on home decor decisions. So when I heard about the company Katie wanted to launch, I wanted in right away. With my background in technology management, marketing and design, I was a natural fit to join the team to launch Roomations.

Q: What’s your role at the company?

A: We kind of all do a little bit of everything around here, but my major responsibility is managing the technology behind roomations.com. We've partnered with an awesome firm in Chicago, Sphere Consulting, who is developing our beta site. My role includes coordinating with the rest of the roomations team, brainstorming site ideas and communicating that to Sphere. I also make decisions on a lot of other technical stuff that you're probably not interested in. Lately I've been handling our twitter feed because clearly, I'm the funniest one on our team :) (kidding!).

Q: Who’s your favorite designer?

A: This is a tough question! As far as current designers, I love Candice Olson. I feel like she incorporates the perfect blend of traditional and contemporary elements and she has an amazing eye for color (and sparkle!). It's a very chic, glamorous look.

Q: How would you describe your personal design style?

A: I gravitate towards bold and bright colors that aren't typically used in homes. I also like to mix and match the old and new. For example, I have a couple of super-cute, very traditional wood side tables that are painted a bright seafoam green. I feel like doing this can modernize a piece but keep the traditional elements that I find interesting.

Q: Where do you like to shop?

A: Anywhere that will take my credit card. I do shop online a lot though.

Q: #1 piece of advice for homeowners?

A: Have a plan! The worst spaces I've seen are when a someone buys one piece at a time without giving it much thought.  It's good to have some sort of vision for your room beforehand. You don't have to buy everything at once, but just know how things will fit. Roomations designers are here to help you with that!

Q: If you weren’t doing this, what would you be doing?

A: Sitting on a beach.

Q: Deep dish or thin crust?

A: I plead the fifth since I live in Chicago!
