by Roomations designer The Mod Decorist
The challenge with this space is that the decor was previously so dark and heavy. My clients wanted to brighten up the room and help it feel more modern and sophisticated. The first element I tackled was the heavy wood trimmed ceiling. It was difficult to convince them to paint the ceiling but once I showed them a rendering of what it could look like they were on board! As you can see it brightens up the room instantly. Gone are the red walls and in its place a nice grey lilac. This color next to the burnt orange drapery fabric, carpet and chair upholstery made for a very unusual yet harmonious combination. The ceiling, wainscoting and the collection of milk glass plates create a nice crisp contrast to the warm cherry dining room set and floor.
Adding a new chandelier created a nice sparkle and glow to the space. I also added two wing chairs at either end of the table to create privacy and balance. Moving the hutch to the adjacent wall also created better flow and allowed me to add some custom art and curated collection of milk glass plates. I love traditional silhouettes but decided to make these a bit more modern. Flanked by the plates they create art that will become heirlooms!
